We have made it to the ocean!!

We reached an exciting milestone in the project by out-planting our pioneering seaweeds into the ocean on a raft in Mahanga Bay. This is part of our approach of introducing the seaweeds to the water using different techniques over a period of time. These young kelp are leading the way forward for the seaweed forests that will follow them. We are watching them closely and monitoring their growth so we can understand what the optimum conditions are for growing giant kelp here in Wellington.

They had a rude start in their new home with all the crazy weather battling the wind and giant swells around Wellington. Luckily, most of the seaweeds are still attached and we have still managed to see significant growth.

Over the next few weeks, we will be out-planting the next lot of seaweed using green gravel that will be suspended in cages from a raft. Be sure to follow us on our socials to see how that’s going!
