The Seaweeds

If you’ve ever had the opportunity to stick your head underwater and explore the ocean forests on our doorstep, you will have noticed the vast diversity of seaweed species. They come in various colours ranging from pink, brown and green to golden, and can be tiny and crust-forming or large, leafy and three-dimensional. Some form chains of pearls and others look like little underwater trees.

Like trees and plants on land, different seaweeds prefer different kinds of environments. There are species that prefer shallow rock pools and are therefore able to cope with large variations of temperatures and salinity. Others you will only find in the deep or underneath larger seaweeds.

In this project we are initially focusing on species that naturally occur in the Wellington area in the past, but also are known to be easy to grow or transplant.

As the project develops you will be able to find more information on the seaweed species we are trialling here.
