The Sites

Seaweeds do not just grow anywhere.
They need rocky substrate to attach to and suitable environmental conditions such as a cosy range of temperatures, a bit but not too much wave action, some nutrients and enough sunlight in order to grow.

Therefore the sites we are choosing for our project have to be carefully picked in order to increase our success to establish a new, self-sustainable forest.

As the project develops you will be able to find more information on our restoration sites here.

We are currently collecting data on historical seaweed beds from along Wellington’s coastline to learn where, what kind, and how much seaweed used to grow here in Te Whanganui-a-Tara.

We are also working together with NIWA and the Victoria University of Wellington to establish maps of current environmental gradients around the harbour to identify suitable sites for our restoration efforts. Finding the sweet spot is not that easy and we are very thankful for all the mahi from our local scientists and volunteers that help us gathering the data we need!
