How to Make Seaweed Babies…
We begin the regeneration project in the hatchery by putting the ‘love’ in Love Rimurimu as we make some seaweed babies. The team has begun some crucial training with seaweed expert Roberta D’Archino from NIWA. She is here to help us learn more about the birds, the bees and the seaweeds. One of the challenges ahead is understanding the reproductive cycle of different seaweed species, and how we’re going to grow them and get them out from hatchery and into the ocean. Once they’re in the ocean they can start doing their magic and we can start to monitor changes in the ecosystem and its potential as a tool in combating the effects of climate change. We have big dreams for our little spores so it’s important we get this step right.
Our good friends and industry partner Mahanga Sea Vegetables are helping with this phase, supported by NIWA and Victoria University of Wellington’s scientists and technicians.
It’s a collaborative effort with lots to learn.
We’ll keep you updated with how our babies are doing…
