The Love Rimurimu Education Program

The Love Rimurimu education programme is in full swing with Mountains To Sea Wellington, with all the kura cracking into their Term 3 learning. They started the term with field trips to their local coastlines looking for fertile Ecklonia and Lessonia. This is the time of year when the true kelps around Wellington are reproducing, so the students have been learning how to identify and extract these spores to grow the macroalgae in class. They’ve had expert input from both Roberta and Chris in this regard.

The akonga are also learning all about maps and starting to build up an overview of Te Whanganui-a-Tara. They are compiling knowledge from cultural and other sources in tandem with the restoration project with the hopes of figuring out the most ideal sites for planting seaweed. Gemma Wright and Aaria Dobson-Waitere of Taranaki Whānui have now both been into Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Te Ara Whanui to share some incredible korero about the harbour space and to start the kids off on their mapping journey.
